During a recent appearance on NBC's "The Tonight Show," Gates stated that most tasks currently requiring specialized human skills will be easily performed by AI technology.

He emphasized that while expertise in fields like medicine and education is currently rare and relies on exceptional professionals, in the near future, quality medical advice and tutoring will become widely accessible and free.

A New Era of "Free Intelligence"

Gates described this shift as entering an era of "free intelligence," where AI will increasingly integrate into everyday life, transforming healthcare and learning. He envisions AI tutors becoming a common resource for education.

While acknowledging the rapidity and potential risks of this technology, Gates expressed a sense of optimism about AI’s ability to facilitate breakthroughs in various sectors, including healthcare improvements and climate solutions. He noted that there will still be human-specific activities, particularly in entertainment, but many traditional roles will evolve or become obsolete.

Concerns and Opportunities in AI Development

Despite the potential for job displacement, some analysts view AI as a tool that could enhance productivity and create new economic opportunities. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman highlighted the significant and potentially destabilizing impact AI may have on the workforce.

While also recognizing the concerns of misinformation and errors in AI, Gates believes that the technology's positive contributions outweigh the negatives. He encourages the next generation to explore AI-centric ventures, claiming that opportunities in this field are vast and promising.

Gates has been a proponent of AI for nearly a decade, having previously recognized the capabilities of systems like Google’s DeepMind, which surpassed human performance in complex tasks.
