RROCK Residency Teachers Complete First Year

Mar 27 2025

As the inaugural cohort of teacher residents at Round Rock ISD concludes their first year, they reflect on their unique classroom experiences.

Hands-on Training and Unique Experiences

Starting in August, seven teacher residents from Texas State University and Concordia University have been actively engaged at C.D. Fulkes Middle School through the RROCK Residency program. This program was initiated in June 2024 as a paid alternative to traditional student teaching, offering comprehensive classroom training along with competitive salaries and full benefits.

Michelle Jeffers, a professional development teammate for the residents, highlighted the program's distinct approach: “Unlike traditional student teaching, where residents may start after routines are formed, our residents begin the year with us—engaging with students and the classroom culture from day one.”

The Importance of Long-term Engagement

Abby Walker, one of the teacher residents, emphasized the benefits of spending an entire academic year in the classroom. “I would recommend it over and over again,” Walker expressed, noting that witnessing student growth firsthand has been rewarding. She shared, “I’ve seen tremendous growth in students who were once defiant. By building relationships, I saw a spark in them that motivated them to learn.”

Impact on Teacher Retention and Development

Research indicates that teacher residents are significantly more likely to remain in their teaching roles and achieve better student outcomes. This finding supports Round Rock ISD’s commitment to enhancing teacher development and retention.

Walker appreciates the mentorship through the program, which has equipped her for her future career. “I’m already reaching out to principals and preparing for interviews thanks to the resources and support I receive,” she stated.

C.D. Fulkes Principal Penny Oates commented on the positive influence the teacher residents have brought to the school: “Their contributions have been a pleasure to observe, and I believe they will become impactful leaders in their careers.” Upon completing their residency, six of the seven educators are set to transition to contracted teaching positions within the district, signifying a strong commitment to nurturing new talent.

For individuals considering this path, Walker advises: “Just do it—and once you’re there, jump in. Being involved from day one accelerates your learning.”
