UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Students Teaching Students (STS) program is marking its fifth year by offering unique elective courses designed and taught by undergraduate students. Among the offerings is an Introduction to Formula One course, where student instructors lead discussions on this popular racing series. The program has gained traction, with courses like the Formula One class being taught for seven semesters since its introduction in 2022.
Ayaan Umar, a management information systems major at the Smeal College of Business and an instructor for the spring 2025 semester, appreciates the experience he gains through teaching. “Over the last semester and a half, I have very much enjoyed teaching,” Umar stated. He highlighted the development of essential skills such as communication and time management, which are invaluable in his personal and professional growth.
Jason Agnoli, a marketing major and also an instructor for the Formula One course, expressed his passion for sharing knowledge. Drawing from prior experience as a teaching assistant, Agnoli enjoys exploring different instructional methods and simplifying complex topics for students. “I love to teach, especially about a subject I enjoy, such as Formula One,” he said.
Lisa Wang, the current STS program director, emphasized the comprehensive support provided to student instructors, including resources for course development and access to the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence. STS fosters a deep engagement with subjects in an enriching environment, blending academic and personal growth for student instructors.
