2024 Charter Professors and Provost Teaching Awardees Announced

Each year, Arizona State University (ASU) honors faculty who significantly contribute to the university's charter and community engagement. This year, Executive Vice President and University Provost Nancy Gonzales has named Maureen McCoy and Trevor Reed as the 2024 Charter Professors, along with Provost Teaching Awards for Carolyn Cavanaugh Toft and Heather Bateman.

Gonzales expressed her pride in celebrating the faculty's commitment to innovation and community engagement during a panel discussion at ASU’s FOLC Fest. “Their passion, innovation, and dedication inspire all of us,” she stated.

Profiles of the Awardees

  • Maureen McCoy: As a teaching professor in the College of Health Solutions, McCoy focuses on improving food access and nutritional education for students. She aims to enhance food literacy and teach students to prepare nutritious meals with limited resources.
  • Trevor Reed: A law professor and faculty director of ASU’s Indigenous Innovation Initiative, Reed is dedicated to protecting Indigenous creators' rights. His plans include developing training programs to assist Indigenous entrepreneurs and artists with intellectual property navigation.
  • Carolyn Cavanaugh Toft: Toft, who teaches large-enrollment psychology classes, employs storytelling to connect with students. With over 16,000 students taught, she emphasizes critical thinking and engagement in her teaching methods.
  • Heather Bateman: Bateman integrates hands-on learning with wildlife conservation and supports students' professional development by providing resources for fieldwork. She is committed to creating opportunities for students to apply their learning outside the classroom.
