Dhivehi's unique script, Thaana, is a significant aspect of its distinctiveness. Thaana, which is written from right to left, was derived from earlier script systems, including Dhives Akuru and the Arabic script. The Thaana script comprises twenty-four primary letters, specifically structured as consonants with an inherent vowel, along with diacritics to modify this vowel. Interestingly, the letters of the Thaana alphabet are ordered based on the shapes of the numerals, where the first nine represent the Arabic numerals, and the remaining fifteen indicate aspects of the moon's cycle. This system reveals the creative synthesis of linguistic and numeral concepts in the Dhivehi language.
