Joe Szafarowicz's Lasting Impact

Joe Szafarowicz, a former educator, is set to celebrate his 80th birthday this Saturday. Despite retiring from a 32-year teaching career, including four years at St. Agnes Elementary School and 28 years in the Toledo Public Schools, Szafarowicz continues to positively influence young lives.

“Retirement has allowed me to pursue my interests,” Szafarowicz stated. His current projects involve using art to aid troubled youths within the juvenile justice system, reflecting his lifelong commitment to education and mentorship.

Fond Memories from Former Students

  • Darlene Goatley, a student from Szafarowicz's seventh-grade class, shared her memories of him. "He was more than just a teacher," she remarked. "He took a personal interest in all his students."
  • During his teaching years, Szafarowicz helped Goatley secure a college scholarship, which profoundly changed her life trajectory.
  • Waterville Mayor Tim Pedro also recalls his time in Mr. Szafarowicz’s class, emphasizing how he motivated students and inspired them to persevere.

Ongoing Contributions to the Community

Even beyond the classroom, Szafarowicz continues to dedicate himself to educational initiatives. He recently took on the role of director of fine arts and vocational education for First Focus, an agency aimed at supporting teens and adults dealing with mental health challenges through creative arts.

“Art enhances life daily, and it can save lives,” he asserts, underscoring the transformative power of art in education. Many of his former students, including Goatley, remain connected and are eager to honor his contributions at the upcoming birthday celebration.
