Korean evolved from Middle Korean, which was spoken from the 10th to 16th centuries. Modern Korean is based on the dialect of the Joseon Dynasty, which ruled from the late 14th century until the early 20th century. It is believed that the Joseon Dynasty introduced many of the modern-day Korean language elements, including the Hangul alphabet.
