Low Support from Teachers

MENDON, Ill. — The Mendon School Board voted 4-3 on March 19 to grant Superintendent Scott Riddle a one-year contract, despite a recent survey indicating that less than 10 percent of the teachers union in Community Unit School District 4 supported him. The survey, conducted by Brent Zanger, a third-grade teacher and president of the Unit Four Teachers Association, revealed significant discontent among the staff.

Survey Results and Concerns

According to the survey results, four teachers abstained from voting, while four were in favor of extending Riddle’s contract. However, 26 teachers, nearly two-thirds of the union members, expressed opposition. Many staff members believe the leadership in the district lacks the inspiration and communication that are necessary for a positive educational environment.

  • Four teachers supported the contract extension.
  • Twenty-six teachers opposed the extension.
  • Four teachers abstained from voting.

Board Members' Reactions

The board members who supported Riddle's extension included Danielle Fleer, Steve Arnsman, Louis Janssen, and Matt Garmer, while Ashley Shaffer, Matt Rolando, and Eric McClelland voted against it. Shaffer noted that while the opinions of the staff were heard, other factors influenced her decision. She emphasized the need for improvement in the district and expressed concerns about the current leadership.

Future Steps for Improvement

Shaffer highlighted the importance of establishing an action plan for the superintendent and other administrators. She stressed that there is always room for improvement in leadership. Brent Zanger hopes that changes can occur, suggesting that if a new leader emerges, it may help to restore respect among the staff.
