The original text of The Art of War by Sun Tzu was written in Classical Chinese, also known as Literary Chinese, the language used in formal written works during ancient China. Classical Chinese was the written standard for more than two millennia, from the earliest recorded history (around the 14th century BCE) until the early 20th century. Unlike Modern Chinese or Mandarin, Classical Chinese has a more concise and compact syntax, often employing fewer characters to express ideas. Due to its versatility and precision, Classical Chinese became the medium of choice for scholars, officials, and writers, lending itself well to the sophisticated thinking and complex ideas presented in The Art of War.
