The Gutenberg Bible, also known as the 42-line Bible, is predominantly written in Latin. Latin was the scholarly language of the time, as well as the language of the Catholic Church. The version used for the Gutenberg Bible is known as the Vulgate, which was translated from the original Hebrew and Greek sources by St. Jerome in the late fourth century. Widely accepted by scholars and the Church, the Vulgate became the standard text of the Bible used throughout Europe.
